The art work of Thelma Matson (1904 - 2002)
Thelma Euphemia Roubichaud was born in 1904 in Crystal Falls, Michigan in the Upper Penninsula. She married Charlie Matson in the 1920's and became mother to Charles and Jan. After they had grown, Thelma took up painting in the late 1940's. In Pontiac, Michigan, her sister Mae talked her into taking a china plate painting class. The instructor Mrs. Shaw, recognized Thelma's talent and invited her to paint with her. Thelma would later describe the process of painting as her "shangri-la". Along the way, Thelma attended the prestigious Cranbrook Art Institute to study painting. Her studio was in the basement of her and Charlie's Denby Drive home in Drayton Plains, a suburb of Detroit, Michigan.
